The M-422A flight jacket
Flying across the Pacific, USN and USMC aircrews needed a comfortable and functional flight jacket, suitable for the cockpit and windy deck conditions. The classic fur-lined, goatskin M-422A flight jacket met every requirement. The M-422A became standard issue for USN and USMC aircrews throughout WW2. Its practical and popular design, with only minor modifications, continues to inspire today’s aviation jackets, reminiscent of the famous G-1 style.
Closely modeled after its predecessor, the M-422A featured a pencil slot in the left pocket for assignments. Like other flight jackets of the era, each manufacturer added its own detailing, creating variations in production. We studied an original WW2 Gordon and Ferguson M-422A, replicated its pattern, and preserved all key features. Notable elements include the wider pencil pocket and salmon red lining. Gordon and Ferguson held one of the largest contracts for naval flight gear during WW2. Many originals still exist in private collections today.
